Choosing the Right Spot for a Skylight
At Roof Space Renovators, we’re here to help brighten up your life and home with the natural light from a skylight. The most common locations for skylights in the home are:
- Dining areas
- Above staircases
- Living areas
We usually place skylights in low lit/dark areas or areas of the home that require additional ventilation. Our glass skylights are a beautiful addition to a home and can be installed into a tile or metal roof.
The size of the skylight is dependent on the truss spacing and the depth of the shaft is reliant on the roof pitch (distance between the ceiling and the roof in the proposed installation point).
The glass skylights can be sometimes tricky to install exactly where you may want them due to obstructions such as trusses, roof valleys, electrical wires, lights, plumbing, air con ducting etc (most of these obstructions can be relocated however it comes at a cost).
To see what would work in your home, one of our experienced consultants can come and visit to understand where you would like a skylight and then pop up into the roof space / onto the roof, to ensure it will work and explain what the process involves. Often, we are able to find an alternative solution that may work as well or if not better than the customer originally wanted.
Choosing a brand of skylight comes down to personal preference. At Roof Space Renovators we have a range of Keylite, Fakro and Velux branded skylights to select from.
- Velux have a long-standing reputation while Fakro and Keylite are newer to Australia.
- Fakro have a timber finish frame, not painted white like Velux or Keylite.
- Keylite have the highest rated technical specs (U-Value, glass thickness etc).
So, there is really no preferred choice when it comes to brand and a particular room where the skylight is installed. A more modern home may choose the white painted frame (Keylite or Velux). A home with timber finishes, may choose Fakro because of the exposed timber frame.
